Description
Dade Green is haunted from youth by the death of his parents and the sale of his slave and friend, Ebenezer, for money to attend a Virginia military school. His angst deepens after seeing a gang of Irishmen hang Ebenezer and throw his body in a river. Despite growing ambivalence toward slavery, but fearing the loss of his beloved South, he becomes a captain in the Confederate Army. Dade endures multiple wounds in major battles, imprisonment, starvation, and amputation of his lower leg, but survives. He settles in the ruined state of Mississippi, and as if unconsciously seeking redemption, marries Sarah, an abolitionist, and raises a family. Klansmen, fed up with Sarah’s outspoken views, finally succeed in driving the family out of town. His sons, scarred by this embarrassment, turn against their mother’s views and join the Klan. In order to please his sons, Dade agrees to ride with the Klan one night, and history is repeated. Dade dies never recovering from the guilt of that night and his part in the death of Ebenezer. His ghost remains in his son’s home as it is passed along through dysfunctional generations. He appears to intervene at crucial times to various members of his family, but is unable to find peace until his defiant great, great granddaughter visits and brings along an unexpected gift. Redeemed by Blood is also available in eBook format from Amazon for $2.99. Published 2012.
